“Always With Me,” originally titled “いつも何度でも / Itsumo Nando Demo,” is the theme song for Studio Ghibli‘s anime film “Spirited Away web“. (“千と千尋の神隠し / Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi / Le Voyage de Chihiro / Chihiros Reise ins Zauberland / El viaje de Chihiro etc. “) It was originally created for a shelved movie called “Rin the Chimney Painter.” Rin was later depicted as one of the characters in Spirited Away.
Now, although there is a title for the English version, let’s read the original Japanese title.
- いつも [itsumo] : always
- 何度でも [nando demo] : any number of times
It is obvious to translate “いつも / itsumo” as “Always,” but let’s break it down into “いつ / itsu” and “も / mo.” “いつ / Itsu” is “When”, and “も / mo” can be translated as “Also” or “Even”, indicating similar occurrences. If we consider the options of yesterday, today, and tomorrow, “itsumo” means it applies to any of those times. That’s “Always.”
Similarly, “何度 / nando” is “How many times”, and “何度でも / nando demo” means any number of times. If the options are once, twice, thrice, it applies to any of them. In this song, it might be translated as “many times.”
呼んでいる 胸のどこか奥で
yonde iru mune no doko ka oku de
いつも心踊る 夢を見たい
itsumo kokoro odoru yume o mitai
- 呼ぶ（よぶ） [yobu] : call
- 胸（むね） [mune] : chest
- どこか（どこか） [doko ka] : somewhere

(translation) “Calling somewhere deep in my heart.
I always want to see dreams that make my heart dance.”
Here, “胸 / mune” (=chest) means heart.
“心踊る / kokoro odoru” is an idiomatic expression that conveys a feeling of joy or excitement as if the heart is dancing.
かなしみは 数えきれないけれど
kanashimi wa kazoekirenai keredo
その向こうできっと あなたに会える
sono mukou de kitto anata ni aeru
- かなしみ（かなしみ） [kanashimi] : sadness
- 数えきれない（かぞえきれない） [kazoekirenai] : countless

Encountering the vastness of the sky and the road compared to oneself feels like experiencing the greatness of nature.
さよならのときの 静かな胸
sayonara no toki no shizuka na mune
ゼロになるからだが 耳をすませる
zero ni naru karada ga mimi o sumaseru
- さよなら（さよなら） [sayonara] : goodbye
- とき（とき） [toki] : time
- 静かな（しずかな） [shizuka na] : quiet

- 耳を澄ませる（みみをすませる） [mimi o sumaseru] : listen carefully
(translation) “At the time of goodbye, my quiet chest
and my body become zero, listening carefully.”
生きている不思議 死んでいく不思議
ikite iru fushigi shinde iku fushigi
花も風も街も みんなおなじ
hana mo kaze mo machi mo minna onaji

- 不思議（ふしぎ） [fushigi] : wonder, mystery
- 死ぬ（しぬ） [shinu] : die
- 花（はな） [hana] : flower
- 風（かぜ） [kaze] : wind
- 街（まち） [machi] : town
- みんな（みんな） [minna] : all
- 同じ（おなじ） [onaji] : same
(translation) “The wonder of living, the wonder of dying.
Flowers, wind, towns, all are the same.”
Flowers, wind, and towns all are given life and then die. This poem seems to be written with a uniquely Japanese perspective, with a reverence for nature.

This is just a scat part, but it seems to have meaning in being output as Japanese characters, although I cannot explain it accurately. This scat notation is not a musical score but more like play.
呼んでいる 胸のどこか奥で

itsumo nando demo yume o egakou
かなしみの数を 言い尽くすより
kanashimi no kazu o iitsukusu yori
同じくちびるで そっとうたおう

This song part might be referring to the “ラ ララン.. / La La Ran” part mentioned earlier. It could be called the song within the song lyrics.

As I explained at the beginning, the title “いつも何度でも / Itsumo Nando Demo” has a very gentle and accepting something when combined with the atmosphere of the song.
This song is performed with a lyre played and sung by Yumi Kimura, a gentle three-beat song using a soothing melody.
